I started working in the city today... I enjoy my job, however I wish I had AIM or something to keep me sane throughout the hours of online research I have to do. The office out in Boulder, CO moniters the network (as it did at PublicAffairs as well) so I am unable to add software to my computer. The pros and cons about this job:
Pros: They pay my travel, it is the HQ of a large publishing company that controls six smaller subdivisions, Fridays are short days so I can leave by 1 or 2, NO tedious office work such as filing or answering phones, business casual dress and jeans :), the people there seem very cool.
Cons: I don't really have an established workstation/office like I had at PublicAffairs, the environment is much larger and I am more limited to one department rather than having the opportunity to float around from editorial and publicity, and over 30 people work in this office (only 14 at PublicAffairs).

But it really would be better if I did not keep relating this position to the one I had at PublicAffairs. I like it but it has a different feel than PublicAffairs... more corporate, less intimate. I was able to really work closely with people there. I am sure I will with Perseus as well but I need to get used to a larger office.

I am also very happy that I get to work for the next 10 days straight without a day off. I think you just might be jealous.

In other news, Mike calls me up trying to schedule this camping thing with Josh upstate (Josh and Mike are swimming buddies and Josh was my roommate for 2 years). While we originally planned for August, Josh is going away so we can no longer do it then. The only options were the next few weekends. As I said before, I am working through the 24th, so next weekend is out. The following weekend I have the DAVE MATTHEWS CONCERTTTTTTT on Randall's Island. While Mike says that works out best for he and Josh, I must apologize, for I will not miss this concert. Perhaps I will visit Josh on my own time if I can find a weekend to go up. Mike lives in Staten Island and works in Brooklyn so I see him all of the time anyway. I am a little sad that there will be no camping trip, but that is life. I just would like to get some time in with Josh before he leaves for Madrid in the Fall because once he comes back I will be going to Berlin.

Last night Heather and Joe came over, Doug joined us later. I am happy that my friends make the effort to drive out from Manhasset to see me, despite the fact it is only 15 minutes away, Manhasset people in general don't wander too much unless it is to the city or the Hamptons. My friends are really good about it though and I am grateful for that.
